Bird Hunting Week 3

The weather was mild this past weekend as well, with temperatures in the 60’s.  I was back at it again for a Saturday hunt in the Rangeley Lakes area with my buddy Scott.  We put up a fair amount of birds, covered a lot of country both on foot and in the truck, and had were able to bag a few birds in the process.

One interesting aspect of this weeks trip was to see an adult bald eagle and two juvenile bald eagles.  We surprised them as we cam around a corner of a gravel logging road we were driving on.  The eagles had been feeding on and old moose carcass in a slash pile off the side of the road.  They took flight as we approached and the adult bald eagle flew towards the truck coming within 20 feet of us and made a sharp turn and flew away from us following the gravel road.  The wing span of this magnificent animal had to be 6-7’ wide.  It was one of the most impressive things I have seen and it was great to see that bird as close as we were.  Unfortunately, my camera was buried in my back pack and I did not get a chance to get a shot of the mature bald eagle.  However, the two juveniles did hang around in a nearby tree and I was able to get some distant photos of them.

We did try an come back later in the day with our cameras ready, but the Eagles seemed to be on alert and kept their distance.

Towards the end of the day the weather started to turn and sky looked ominous.  We called it a day around 5:30PM as the sun was setting with the sound of thunder in the distance.
